More than 900 firearms destroyed at Hermosillo event

Members of the military destroyed more than 900 firearms at an event in Hermosillo, Sonora.
During an event in the Mexican state of Sonora, just south of Arizona, Mexico’s military destroyed more than 900 firearms Thursday on International Firearms Destruction Day.
At a military base in the state capital of Hermosillo, military members sawed through the barrels of firearms and destroyed more than 400,000 rounds of ammunition.

The event in Hermosillo coincided with a national event in Mexico City led by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
Mexico launched a gun buyback program last year, in which people can exchange firearms for cash. The government says it has recuperated more than 2,000 firearms under the program.
Mexico has extremely restrictive firearms laws, and officials say more than 70% of guns used by organized crime in the country can be traced back to the United States.
