CNTNTS makes Hot Pop for dancing from Mexico City

In Iztapalapa, Mexico City, an independent band is breaking down conventions with a musical genre never heard before, which they’ve dubbed “Hot Pop.” This group is called CNTNTS (pronounced continents) and brings with it an eclectic style that blends indie rock, pop, reggaeton, and electronic music.

In an interview with Mexican Press Agency, María, lead singer of CNTNTS, described this new genre as dance music that allows you to be present in the moment and stop thinking about everything else for a second.
Nobody knows how to party like Latinos, as Richi, producer and keyboardist of CNTNTS, put it. The essence of their music is intimately linked to enjoyment. This is one of the great differences in the pop that this band offers. It’s not exactly the reggaeton that’s taking the world by storm, but it’s also not traditional pop that doesn’t make you want to move your hips.

This group is made up of musicians with parallel projects, as Richi explained to us: “Everyone has their own separate projects, here we experiment and we also manage ourselves.”
For Axel, the band’s guitarist, the essence of CNTNTS is stepping outside of a comfort zone. “Hot pop and what we’re doing is something that’s very ingrained in us, not getting stuck in a rut and creating an alter ego of ourselves,” the musician shared.
Ulises, bassist and vocalist of this Mexican band, shared that Latin music has always been present in the international market, but the spotlight had been focused only on certain genres.
The band members also discussed the challenges of being artists in Mexico. María, the lead singer, explained that, with the exception of Richi, they all have jobs unrelated to music that allow them to pursue their passion.
Despite the economic obstacles, the members of CNTNTS are also convinced that creating from the periphery of the city allows them to have a fresh, real style that is not found in the productions of other artists.
With only 4 songs on Spotify, their destiny is yet to be written, but they shared with MxPA that they are already in the process of writing more material and that we will soon be able to hear them live.
